The morning began at the local market. We followed Ling as she explained the ingredients we would be using for the day. Thai food, in my opinion, is some of the best in all of Southeast Asia. So of course a Thai cooking class was a must. I had to learn the secrets ways of creating these mouth watering dishes. It was something I wanted to bring back home with me. I’ll cook, you clean. Deal? That is if I can find all of the ingredients. After looking at the different types of rice and grabbing a quick breakfast we headed to Thai Farm Cooking School.
This Thai cooking school is located about 45 minutes outside of Chiang Mai. They grow all of the ingredients in an organic garden. Ling, our teacher, gave us a tour, showing us the variety of plants and vegetables.
Finally it was time to start cooking. First we had to grind a mixture of ingredients to make the curry powder. It consisted of chili peppers, garlic, lemongrass, cumin seeds, Thai ginseng, and more!
Our menu for the day consisted of Yellow and Green Curry, Tom Yam with Shrimps, Chicken Coconut Soup, Fried Chicken with Cashew Nuts, Springrolls, Papaya Salad, and Mango with Sticky Rice. Mouth watering yet?
Finally I was feeling comfortable in the kitchen. After tasting my first dish I have to admit I was astonished by myself. I am not a cook by any means, but it’s never too late to learn though and this was the beginning for me! I’ve turned over a new leaf and am ready to take on the new title of Chef!
Not saying I’m already a pro, but I am ready to roll up my sleeves and try out some recipes. Also my cooking class days are far from over!
With plenty of food and dessert we were both stuffed to the brim. We couldn’t even finish all of our food, there was just too much! It was such a fun day changing up our typical daily routine and trying something new. Cooking alongside James was something I really enjoyed. This won’t be the last of it.
You should go out and try something you wouldn’t normally do. Trust me, it’s worth it. Before this my go to meals were pasta or macaroni and cheese … from the box. Now I feel like I could whip any dish up … with a step-by-step recipe.
There’s a beginning for everything and it’s really fun learning a new skill! Leave a comment below of something you’ve always wanted to try. Or something that is completely outside your normal routine. Hopefully, I’m not the only one out there that is a noobie cook.
